Veneers

St. Louis Veneers

Veneers are very thin (often less than a half of a millimeter thick), custom-made pieces of porcelain that are bonded to the front surface of a tooth. They are used anytime a patient wishes to change the shape or size of their teeth, or when whitening can not, or does not, achieve a desired lighter color. Once bonded in place, they are strong. A patient wearing veneers can often lead a normal life, eating most anything and everything they wish to eat without fear of the veneers breaking. They are also long- lasting, with the newest veneer technology expected to last potentially 30 to 40 years.

There are two types of veneers. One type is called pressed ceramic. Pressed ceramic veneers are made by bending…or “pressing” a piece of very hot porcelain over a plaster model of a tooth, allowing the thin porcelain to take the shape needed. They are inexpensive, but often lack the realistic look and color that patients want. In certain circumstances, they work just fine. But often, patients having pressed porcelain veneers are unhappy, and experience some degree of buyer’s remorse, as the teeth look “fake” or artificial, with a monochromatic color. In addition, pressed veneers often last only 10-15 years before they become brittle and break. One should always be very careful when choosing to have pressed veneers to make sure it’s right for you.

The other type of veneer is the stacked porcelain veneer. This is a veneer that is made by overlaying many layers of porcelain, each layer mixed and baked individually, and then shaped, by hand, to form the tooth. They are extremely life-like in their color and shape, are very strong. In fact, they can last decades without chipping, staining, or losing their color. They take longer to place by the dentist, and are more expensive to make, and all of that does drive the cost up. But to many the price is worth it.
